There was a CRAZY fire on my street yesterday. 2 residential buildings (and one non residential) were destroyed. The (incredible) Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be hosting a fundraiser tomorrow from 3-7pm at The Edge Bar, in the Castro to gather donations for the fire victims. They will be collecting $, clothing, blankets, and household items.

I thought I'd give my back a break (no pun intended) and take some pictures to break up the jewelry slouching assembly position. I forgot that since I have no formal studio for either of these things, they both hurt. I hope I sell all the designs to support my physical therapy bill! Now I'm on the verge of pain tears and tears of joy! It's amazing seeing the 2011 collection come together after digging through what seemed like a mountain of findings and hardware. Here are some more snapshots with a picture of what was happening seconds before the white paper took its place.

I recently made an illustration to try to collect donations to help my friends in Japan. They are collecting funds for Civic Force through their shop
DEPOT (Civic Force (emergency response team) responds to large scale
natural disasters in Japan, and is established for realizing a more effective and prompt disaster relief by cooperating closely with NGOs, business community and government of Japan.) All Proceeds from this print will be going to this relief fund.

For those of you who know me, you know I have been traveling to Japan for the past 7 years. I think I have been there a total of 11 times and just got back from my last trip last week! Every time I go I am welcomed with open arms, loving hearts and many many presents. Japan is a culture of much gift giving and more love than I could have ever imagined. I have very dear friends there who all contribute to the community, make, bake, entertain and enlighten.

My friends at DEPOT Cycle and Recycle who have been my gracious hosts almost every time I visit (read more about Seiya HERE), are reaching out to their overseas friends to help their country get through this horrific tragedy that has happened. Depot has started a donations page through Justgiving Japan in which they are trying to raise money to donate to Civic Force. Survival is related to any habit, belief, the continuation of life or existence (the origin of which is often unknown or imperfectly known.)

Generally speaking, these techniques are meant to provide basic necessities for human life: fire, water, food, shelter, habitat, the need to think straight, signal for help, to avoid unpleasant interactions with animals and plants, and for first aid. It is a basic idea that humans have used for thousands of years, and these skills can also be viewed as a reenactment of history. Survival teaches us ways to enjoy extended periods of time in remote places, or a ways to thrive in nature. By placing these ideas directly into an annex (a sub-shop within the Curiosity Shoppe), it creates a dialectic between necessities and objects of survival. The plethora of objects in society makes it difficult to distinguish what is actually part of contemporary survival. Survival will be considered in this space, with views of highly curated "natural" settings, existing within the city limits, in an attempt to reflect on the "natural world."

I have to say, I haven't been this excited since forever so forgive my posting every 2.5 seconds. Here is my newest ring in which I am combining my two favorite things: brass findings (I've been collecting since i was a teen - no biggie I finally get to use them!) and freshly cut plastic. I am taking a class at the tech shop this weekend to further explore lase possibilities. SO EXCITED. WOOT.

Last night I started a project involving my massive collection of glassess. 54 pairs! It took over three hours to photograph all of them. I Remember Andrea is a documentary about a high school reunion that BLOWS MY MIND. The most effing funny Andrea Wachner contacted me a little while back to help with a little animation in the film. This is what she has to say about the project:

I was immediately attracted to the funny premise of my documentary, but it was the grey area between belief and disbelief that made me fall in love with its story. When I tell people that I sent a stripper, as me, to my ten-year high school reunion, I am (with few exceptions) met with incredible enthusiasm, generous support, and a barrage of questions. The most consistent is, “Did you go down to the reunion at the end and expose the real you?” Absolutely not. If anything, I wanted to leave people wondering whether that was really me, or not. I guessed that some people would believe it, some people wouldn’t but most would be somewhat unsure. It was this “shadow of a doubt” I was most interested in. Could it be me? Does it matter? Do they care? There was a lot of unexplored ideological space between RSVP’ing ‘Yes’ and ‘No,’ between trying to impress your peers and removing yourself from judgment, and I seem to have found it. As a comedy writer, I believe that humor is powerful. Laughter is the best way that I know to get people to re-think what they think they think. With this film I was able to take a familiar situation—a high school reunion—which most people simply accept without question as a part of life, and turn it on its head, like the incongruous images in a Magritte painting, but funny.

I entered this digital design tournament.

I was chosen (!!!) to along with 7 other designers from SF to compete on February 28th, 2009 to win a shit ton of prizes. Obviously, it would be amazing if I could have some friends up in there to cheer me on. Here is what they about the SF challenge:

San Francisco will host competitions in 2D, 3D, and Motion Graphics for Digital Design Tournament 2009.
